Bug-Out Bag

While not comprehensive by any means, this article outlines the very basic basics you’ll need in a “bug out bag” or 72-hour survival kit, whatever you’d like to call it.  It’s the bare essentials to keep you going when you have nothing else at your disposal.  Most are 3-day kits, some are 5 days.  It all comes down to weight, need, etc.  This list overviews the basics every kit should have.

Included in your survival preparedness plan of action is the Bug-Out Bag. A bug-out bag allows you to move out at a moments notice with the confidence that you have all you need to survive for at least 72-hours. Every member of your group should have a Bug Out bag or kit handy at all times, wherever they are.

Your bug-out bag should be stored in a rugged backpack for easy carrying, and be light enough to carry on foot for long distances. It is not meant for long-term survival, but rather to get you to your pre-arranged rallying point upon “bugging out” where your major supply cache is located.

A good place to keep your bug out bag is in the trunk of your vehicle or in a closet at the office if you commute to work via bus or subway. Depending upon your lifestyle, you may need to cache more than one bug-out bag in order to insure a bag is close by at all times. One never knows when a disaster situation may occur.

Should normal means of transportation and supply break down, a bug-out bag will give you the necessary supplies you need to survive independently for several days. During this time you can be traveling toward the pre-arranged rallying point of your survival group.
